Baptisia Starlite Prairieblues™ (False Indigo)
Podalyre The common name, False Indigo pp19971
One of the earliest Baptisia to bloom, this plant produces very impressive 24" long flower spikes with densely spaced vivid violet buds and cool periwinkle flowers with buttercream keels in late spring to early summer. The spikes extend well-above the attractive blue-green foliage and tend to arch gracefully outward as they age. Plants burst into flower towards late May, lasting for several weeks with a nice foliage effect for the remainder of the season. Suited to the middle or back of a sunny border. Green seedpods develop in summer and once ripe these are useful in dried arrangements or for winter effect in the garden. A non-spreading plant that gets large, so allow for plenty of space since plants resent being disturbed or moved once established. In fall, the seed pods turn charcoal black and make an interesting addition to fall bouquets.
STARLITE PRAIRIEBLUES™ has a vase-shaped habit when it is young, maturing into a broadly rounded shrub-like plant. Baptisia is easy to grow and will thrive with little maintenance.
