Melons prefer a warm, sunny spot with sandy, fertile soil. Sow outdoors two weeks after the last spring frost when the soil is thoroughly warm. Start transplants indoors about three weeks before last frost date. Avoid disturbing tender roots when transplanting. Keep plants evenly moist during the growing season for best production.
Melons will be ready to harvest when they turn from white to yellow where they touch the ground, and the vine tendrils turn from yellow to brown.
