A garden favorite since the 1890s. Sturdy semi-dwarf plants bear an abundance of tender dark green sprouts on a thick stalk for several weeks. Delicious roasted or steamed.

Sow in rich, moist soil four to six weeks before last spring frost. Time your plantings to mature while weather is cool, usually late spring or early fall. Start indoors six weeks before last spring frost date. Transplant outdoors two weeks before last frost. Sow in midsummer for a fall crop, or late fall in mild climates. Feed monthly with compost tea or vegetable fertilizer to maintain vigorous growth.
