Baptisia 'American Goldfinch' (False Indigo)

Common name, False Indigo pp30478

One of the earliest Baptisia to bloom, this plant produces very impressive 24" long flower spikes with densely spaced bright golden buds and keels in late spring to early summer.  The spikes extend well-above the attractive blue-green foliage and tend to arch gracefully outward as they age. Plants burst into flower towards late May, lasting for several weeks with a nice foliage effect for the remainder of the season. Suited to the middle or back of a sunny border. Green seedpods develop in summer and once ripe these are useful in dried arrangements or for winter effect in the garden. A non-spreading plant that gets large, so allow for plenty of space since plants resent being disturbed or moved once established. In fall, the seed pods turn charcoal black and make an interesting addition to fall bouquets.

Produces many weeks of sunny blooms, about the size of a pea, on long, slender stems above its wide habit; attractive round seed pods in the fall. Can thrive in nearly any type of soil and is beneficial to pollinators.
