Astilbe chinensis 'Lowlands Ruby Red'
False Spirea
Good texture! Attracts Butterflies and Hummingbirds!
Early bloomer; one of the best new red 'chinensis' type introductions, cherry-red flowers appear in early summer above glossy deep green foliage.
Feathery flowers are upright. Great for color in the shade.
Clump-forming perennials which feature graceful, fern-like mounds, usually with sharply toothed leaflets, and tiny flowers densely packed onto erect, often arching, plume-like flower panicles, rising above the foliage on slender, upright stems, producing a dense, almost cloud effect, that appears to shimmer in the wind.
Upright stems with plumes of flowers rise from a mound of elegant, lacy green leaves. Astilbe does not like sunny locations so excellent for semi or full shade locations with plenty of organic matter and moisture. Use a good quality compost and feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer.
Great when combined with Hosta and Ligularia
Needs regular watering - weekly, or more often in extreme heat.
